Swimwear Fashion Designer Interview with Tracy Basting, Tashi Couture Founder

Why did you decide to become a fashion designer?

Since I can remember I’ve always had a creativeness that allowed me to envision different designs I wanted to produce in fashion. As I existed to world of figure competitions, I realized I still wanted to be a part of the fitness industry. The part I’ve always truly loved is seeing women push themselves to find that motivation from within to improve their health, self-esteem and overall well-being. I wanted to be a part of that process and put the finishing touch on all that hard work. So I started designing competition suits and fitness apparel.

Are you self-taught or did you study fashion design?

I am lucky enough to come from a family that is very talented in design, home renovation and the overall imaginative process that goes into any type of design. As a hobby, my Mother was a self-taught extremely skilled seamstress and she had a talent for designing any space to be both elegant and comfortable. She had such an eye for creating such beautiful designs with decor and could whip together unique floral arrangements within minutes. She could sew just about anything you could imagine including draperies and clothing. So I never felt the need to professionally study design because I grew up being inspired by the biggest teacher of them all, my Mother. My Father is skilled in home renovation and can do just about anything to build the foundation of a space in which my Mother would ultimately design. So I guess you could say it all runs in the family.

How has your work evolved since you began your own label?

As all business owners can testify, it is through much blood, sweat and tears that you must grind hard every day and just keep going. My business has grown within 4 years from myself doing everything top to bottom from web design, sewing and pattern making, to hiring a team of people that I can trust to keep my brand evolving and assisting with day to day activity. I now create all types of swimwear for poolside and competitions as well as the fitness apparel and old Hollywood inspired lingerie that is as beautiful as it is comfortable.

Tell us more about your designs.

To me comfort is key in any type of clothing worn. And I think part of feeling beautiful on the inside has much to do with feeling comfortable in the garment you’re wearing. I take a great pride in producing a quality product using only fabrics that feel soft against the skin, don’t dig into any part of your body or make you feel like you constantly need to adjust yourself. I also do a lot of embellishing with genuine Swarovski elements. So if you want an added edge with a bikini, fitness apparel or just want to feel extra sexy in that lingerie, I do love the embellishing process. I actually find it meditative to sit and by hand adorn a garment to give it its own unique stamp.

How do you select the materials you use?

I’m extremely picky with the materials I use. One of the biggest compliments I can receive aside from a garment looking beautiful is that when it is put on, just how comfortable it feels. I want it to feel so soft to the skin that you don’t even feel it on. There are many beautiful fabrics out there but if it isn’t comfortable to wear then who wants to ever wear it? I think if you love the look as much as the feel then it tends to be your “go to” piece.

Do you have a specific research process when you start a new collection?

My brain is always going a mile a minute. I have notes within notes within notes. That’s just the way I operate. And once I hone in on a particular new style I want to create, my mind starts racing with all sorts of ideas and how I’d like to see it all come together. I tend to be all in when I’m working. So once I begin making patterns and thinking of new styles, it will quickly grow to a much larger collection than originally planned. But I love doing it. And when I see girls excited to see the new styles I’ve created, it gets me motivated to begin thinking on the next collection I want to introduce.

Who inspires me most in fashion? Anyone who stands out?

More over one particular designer, what inspires me is being a woman myself and feeling empathetic to the fact that there are a lot of beautiful designs out there but when you go to put them on you can’t wait to take them off. I enjoy having that unique edge that my designs are known for being unique and have a luxurious feeling. I’m inspired by women in general just feeling beautiful. That is what motivates me.

What I the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?

Well where should I start? The first thing that comes to mind is that not everyone has the same work ethic. Some people are in the industry just for the notoriety. Some people are in the industry because of a passion that speaks to them through their heart. Fortunately for as many times as I’ve been let down by having others not follow through with their word or knocking off my designs, my heart is what keeps me going and continues to give me the creativeness to produce what I foresee in my mind. I’ve learned that as long as I stay true to myself and what I believe, I can tune out the rest. I have wanted to give up at times. I think any entrepreneur can testify to that feeling. But when you find the right team of people and you learn to figure out how to spot the go-getters and people that share an equal passion for their work then, you begin to eat, sleep and breathe gaining a whole new excitement for designing and seeing it all come together.

What’s your motto?

“Be sexy, be comfortable, be unique”

What are your plans for the future?

My goals are always changing and once achieved I take it to the next level. For now, my plans are to continue growing and aspire to be a very well-known, reputable brand name. I have a few projects in the works in creating signature lines for other local businesses. I love aligning myself with other inspiring individuals that work hard and stay true to their their dreams.
